![]() ![]() The pink sandstone Palladian mansion was extensively remodelled by Drummond between 17 to the designs of James Salisbury. In 1779, Mure-Campbell's creditors forced him to sell Lawers and it was bought at auction by the London banker Henry Drummond, M.P., son of Lord Strathallan. His only son, James Mure-Campbell (who eventually became the 5th Earl of Loudoun), inherited both Lawers and their family's ancestral seat in Ayrshire, Rowallan Castle. He built Lawers in two stages first from 1724-26 and again from 1737 to 1744, but was said to have slept just one night in his new house before he was killed at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745 during the Wars of the Austrian Succession. After peace was declared in Europe, he was elected to Parliament for Ayrshire and was appointed Groom of the Chamber to George II and Governor of Edinburgh Castle. ![]() Joining the army, he fought at the Battles of Blenheim, Oudenarde and Malplaquet. ![]() James Campbell was a younger son of the 2nd Earl of Loudoun. ![]()
